Yeh, I agree with them, although you missed out the ugly ;) Here's my attempt at 3 ugly:

Apps that are java based, but don't don't yet support vista, they cause havoc with the themes, causing it to change from aero.

Low resolution icons being used, and stretched, not good

Erm, I'm stuck for a third, but well, theres 2 ;)

Well, maybe. The thing is, you've got to make a choice. Secure or not. Of course having to type in a password is an inconvenience. But at least you know what's going on.

As it is now, even with XP it's so bad. Even I, as an "expert", don't know what all those popups are about. Using a firewall makes it even worse. All kinds of programs wanting access to the internet. When you don't allow them access things stop working, so you just click yes every time. And that's with a clean setup, regularly scanned, etc.

I'm sooooo happy I switched :)

That's a good point - especially about people clicking yes automatically, but the problem is, it's such a hard balance to strike between security and convenience. It's perceived to be inconvenient enough to have to click through an extra dialogue, so MS did change it from password authentication to a yes/no quite early on in the Vista beta days.

Of course, I'd prefer it if people were taught from the word go not to run as administrator, but the problem is people are used to doing it the current way and so they see privilege escalation as unnecessary.

It's a step in the right direction, I suppose.

Good attempt at being balanced :)

Could you explain one thing though: how is having more popups in which you have to click "yes" a security improvement? People will only be (even more) annoyed and click yes automatically, even faster then they do now.

A real secure system forces you to enter the admin's username and password to be able to do certain things (like when you install a program or change an important setting). That's called authentication. And that's how it is on unix/osx.

Approving something is different from authenticating.
